Sunflower Seed Oil

By Prospela Team

A featherweight emollient that softens without clogging.

Sunflower seed oil (Helianthus annuus) is a featherweight emollient chosen for one balancing act: it softens and conditions skin while supporting — rather than smothering — its natural barrier. That makes it well-suited to the thin, easily-overwhelmed skin around the eyes.

Its value comes chiefly from linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid the skin uses to build and maintain its outer barrier, alongside naturally occurring vitamin E. Unlike heavier, occlusive oils, it absorbs cleanly and doesn't clog.

Key Benefits

What it does.

01Benefit

Barrier Support

In a controlled study, topical sunflower seed oil preserved the skin's outer barrier and improved hydration — the opposite of heavier oils that can disrupt it.

02Benefit

Lightweight & Non-Clogging

High in linoleic acid, it softens and smooths without a greasy, occlusive film, so it won't weigh down or clog the delicate eye area.

03Benefit

Calming Support

Its linoleic-acid content carries anti-inflammatory activity that helps keep reactive, sensitive skin comfortable.

04Benefit

Antioxidant Boost

Naturally rich in vitamin E, a familiar skin antioxidant that helps protect both the formula and the skin from oxidative stress.

The Science

The research behind it.

In a controlled forearm study, topical sunflower seed oil preserved the skin's stratum corneum barrier and improved hydration without causing irritation — in contrast to heavier oils that can compromise it.

A review of plant oils in dermatology attributes sunflower oil's benefits to its high linoleic-acid content, which supports skin-barrier repair and carries anti-inflammatory activity when applied topically.
